But I didn’t and I feel absolutely terrible about it.
Remember a couple of weeks ago when I told you the story of how after some rain, I found a turtle on the road and re-homed in back into his little dam? Read about it here.
Well today on my way home from work, it was quite a hot day and I was driving home from work on a 4 lane road at around 80k/h, when I noticed a familiar little lump in the middle of the lane on the left hand side of the road. I swerved slightly to miss him. As there were no visible dams or bodies of water around so I didn’t really believe my eyes, and my brain couldn’t compute fast enough that it was a turtle.
I felt guilty leaving the little guy on the road, I didn’t hit him, but was afraid that even though the road wasn’t very busy that someone else might.
I turned around, drove all the way back to the last round-about, did a u-turn and back tracked to where the turtle was. Ahead of me I could see a couple of B-Double trucks driving in the same lane ahead of me.
The same lane as the turtle.
Alas, I could not get back to him to save him in time. And when I got back to his spot on the road, there he was splattered all over the road.
I feel terrible.
If only I’d stopped the first time, if only I didn’t keep driving. If only I had the guts to pull over stop traffic and save him (or her).
I’m sorry I procrastinated. I’m sorry I thought twice about saving your life.
R.I.P Little Turtle.
